tim, this is a great post and huge challenge. we put our seniors on an entirely different track that honors them and their place in life as well as lean into them for leadership and service. we re-crafted our confirmation program and made it for seniors. here is how we do it.

in my 4th year in youth ministry i finally took students on a "mission trip" of sorts. it was short and sweet but extremely powerful. i echo the comments above about preparation and follow up. my biggest fear - the reason i didn't bring students anywhere in my first years of youth ministry - was lack of preparation. i feared students showing up somewhere with an attitude of entitlement: "we paid for an adventure, or an experience, so this better be good."

i'm excited for the future and glad to see someone else plugging Powell's book. i'm definitely going to check it out for our summer trips. any chapters, activities people would suggest as "can't miss"?

Ooo man, glad i read this post! Internships is what gets me excited. Myself i was an intern at my home church and it made all the difference. Now, in my own youth ministry i have implemented a similar internship program. The best thing i've seen work for me and others is equipping them to serve. Servant leadership and teaching that is the core of our program. We are in the business of producing servant leaders because that's what Christ did. How we do that? they serve our church on a weekly basis in our of our programs. Our Student Leaders have a mentor they meet with each week in a same gender group and they serve together during the weekly program. teaching them how to work as a team, how to set goals as individuals and what it means to succeed and fail. Perfect environment for students to learn where they are gifted, passionate, and why there personal growth matters so much. When they are helping lead a junior high group and they are talking about reading there bibles, student leaders begin to realize my faith affects others. we have quarterly retreats for training and fun and we have monthly student leader meeting for this on a smaller scale.

Evaluation isn't an end of the year thing but during the process thing. You notice when they aren't getting it so you realize you need to teach that in one of your weekly, monthly,or quarterly meetings. have a bad and pen always with you and spend some time just watching them. how are they interacting with those they serve, each other, etc. having a conversation and not a lecture allow them to think through it and not be talk to. Help them figure it out themselves and have THEM evaluate the ministry. They get excited when they figure and decide what they can do better. Great post!

I totally believe in short term mission trips! They are so life changing. I have been involved in many different ones, and most of they seemed very purposeful for both sides. My oldest is now working on becoming a full time missionary because of how life changing her first mission trip was.

Over the past couple years, I have struggled a lot through differing opinions on the effectiveness of short-term mission trips. I still do not know where I land, other than being sure of the fact that short-term missions should not be taken lightly. It is very challenging to do short-term missions well. I am starting to really like the idea that short-term missions should be framed more as educational and formational experience rather than just "service" oriented. Let's just be honest about what we're trying to accomplish! This summer wee are doing camp instead of mission trips this, and several parents and students are disappointed. Which makes me ask why? Because you don't get to serve others or because you don't get to travel to some cool foreign country? I could go on and on, but I do agree that to do short-term missions, it takes a whole lot of prep work to get everyone's mindsets closer to the right place. I love mission trips, especially international ones, but I think in recent years I have seen not a whole lot of fruit come from them on either side, so now I am left skeptical!

I agree with the above comments. Want to add a little more on the benefits and downfalls. First, i think the way we communicate and promote these trips is vital. I have seen many times trips be promoted as "we are going to HELP" or support this ministry in Mexico, Kenya, etc because they desperately need our help. If that's truly the case then why don't we raise the money we would have used to go and just send them a BIG check that will make a very big impact upon their situation. In reality the major benefit is for the student and not the organization or place we are going. Do we meet some needs? Of course but the overall purpose is spiritual growth for that individual most of the time. So some talk i have heard it putting a limit on the BIG expensive mission trips students can attend because in reality you only need to go once or twice to get the realization that life is VERY different in our context. However, last thing i will mention... Local Mission trips i think is financially realistic, allows students to make service not a one time a year thing, and makes follow up more realistic and life changing. Great post.
